COWS Gets International Recognition

Adam and Cale join Leon of Malt Mariners and longtime friend Andrea for […]

Hello COWS Enthusiasts,

Well, our little club seems to have found itself another unexpected adventure! Adam and I were invited to join Leon of Malt Mariners on his Whisky Roads YouTube channel to talk about COWS, whisky, and other fun things. Apparently we now have an international audience. Very exciting!!

Four participants laughing around a table with whisky bottles and a microphone during the COWS conversation on Malt Mariners’ Whisky Roads channel.

Leon and fellow COWS member Andrea have been friends for many years, having met in Scotland, and it was through Andrea that he first heard about our little club. Some of you will remember meeting him at our World of Benromach tasting in June, while he was travelling through Canada. He had some very encouraging things to say about our tasting, and we subsequently got together—with Andrea joining us—for a longer conversation and a few interesting bottles.

For those who haven’t met him, Leon is based in Bremen, Germany, where he runs Malt Mariners whisky tastings. He also shares whisky reviews, distillery visits and interviews online. His adventures have taken him to more than 100 distilleries across 12 countries, and he spent time working as a tour guide at GlenDronach. His motto is “Share the whisky, share the experience”, which sounds pretty familiar to us!

We talked about how COWS started, how sharing a few bottles somehow led to owning a cask in Scotland, and the whiskies that got us into this whole adventure in the first place. There were some Canadian whiskies to try, some strong opinions about cocktails, and eventually some mezcal. I also managed to spend a fairly substantial amount of time talking about Sazeracs. Those of you who know me will probably not find that surprising.

Leon has titled the episode “This Canadian whisky talk slightly escalated”, which is a pretty fair description of how the evening went. It’s nearly two hours long, so settle in. There is interesting whisky information. There are stories. There is also quite a lot of laughing.

We’re pretty excited to share a little of the COWS Adventure with people beyond our usual Ottawa herd. A big thank you to Leon for including us, and to Andrea for making the connection and joining in the fun!

Cheers,
Cale
